Good to see others who are keeping the language alive at a fairly young age

Hi, Emilie, I also joined a few a few days ago. Welcome aboard. This is a great site. You can learn alot about the culture. I,m french canadien 100% my wife and I make our home in Saratoga Spings, NY. My brothers and sisters live near by. The rest of my family live in the province of Quebec. Montreal, Three-Rivers, and Quebec city. I also have cousins in Springfield, Mass, Being canadien, means we love music, I play accordion and my cousin plays fiddle. We also love french food, like French fries with cheese and gravy this is called (Poutine) P/S It's not a diet food. Again Emilie, welcome, happy to have you on the site. A La Prochaine, witch means untill next time. Maurice

Profile Information

About Me:
I've just stumbled across this site by accident and I am thrilled! Three of my grandparents are of French-Canadian descent, one from New England, two from Michigan. My fourth grandparent was descended from Marseilles, France. My family has been in New England for many generations. My great-grandmother was born in Haverhill, MA in the late 19th Century, but attended boarding school in Montreal. My grandparents and great-grandparents all spoke French, but my parents did not--that is I don't think they wanted to. I learned French from my grandparents and in school as a kid, though I don't really get to use it very often anymore. The language is in the "permanent" part of my brain though, I'm pretty sure. I took Spanish lessons a few years back and every time the teacher asked for words l'd just give her the French equivalent without thinking. You get a lot of strange looks in Latin America when you toss French words into Spanish sentences.

Anyway, I grew up outside of Boston in a neighborhood with quite a few kids with French last names, but the culture was pretty dominated by all of the Italian and Irish kids.

I now live in Lowell, MA and have a 9-year-old daughter. Since she was born I've done a lot of work on our family tree with my Dad, wanting to help her to understand where our people come from. Luckily living in this part of the state there are lots of people of French descent, so that helps.

I look forward to meeting some of you. Stop by and say hello any time.

Emilie-Noelle
