How much French still exists in New England?

- I've just stumbled across this site by accident and I am thrilled! Three of my grandparents are of French-Canadian descent, one from New England, two from Michigan. My fourth grandparent was descended from Marseilles, France. My family has been in New England for many generations. My great-grandmother was born in Haverhill, MA in the late 19th Century, but attended boarding school in Montreal. My grandparents and great-grandparents all spoke French, but my parents did not--that is I don't think they wanted to. I learned French from my grandparents and in school as a kid, though I don't really get to use it very often anymore. The language is in the "permanent" part of my brain though, I'm pretty sure. I took Spanish lessons a few years back and every time the teacher asked for words l'd just give her the French equivalent without thinking. You get a lot of strange looks in Latin America when you toss French words into Spanish sentences.
Anyway, I grew up outside of Boston in a neighborhood with quite a few kids with French last names, but the culture was pretty dominated by all of the Italian and Irish kids.
I now live in Lowell, MA and have a 9-year-old daughter. Since she was born I've done a lot of work on our family tree with my Dad, wanting to help her to understand where our people come from. Luckily living in this part of the state there are lots of people of French descent, so that helps.

I used to work off the Lowell connector. The company was called Bradco Supply. Now i work in the Worcester office. Keep in touch. Let us know if there is a good French party there.
